Thrilled by Kae

This day was a rush. As I was attending a performance in french of the play Wasted at the Cyclope theater from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., written by none other than Kae Tempest themself ! Half an hour to reach the Lieu Unique and get my ticket from the ticketing booth, and I was in before 6 !!!

But before going back to Kae, the opening act was carried out by Ivy Sole.
They came on stage sure of themself, their musician, Joe Cephas, sneaking in behind them. As Ivy has a strong american accent and was talking pretty fast, most of us in the audience were lagging a bit behind and not getting everything. It was pretty obvious for them that most of us in the crowd had difficulties understanding every bit of words. However we were quickly gained by the musicality and the poetry of their rap. They were really good at warming up the audience. Alternating going back and forth on the stage, and standing still anchored to the ground, calling us to sing or wave with them. Behind them, Joe, while bringing the beat, also did some great back vocals. Then Ivy told us that they were « ready to hear Kae Tempest ». Thanks to both of them, we were too.

The warming up was not just idiomatic, it was getting really hot in the concert venue. Everybody was letting off some clothes. And everybody in the crowd was closing the ranks to be sure not to get cold nonetheless … or well, maybe was it because Kae was about to enter the stage?

And there, they were.

Kae greeted us with some words in french and praised the tourism in Nantes with its elephant. And thanked us for being there and Ivy Sole for the opening. They explained to us that they would start by playing their last album The Line Is A Curve, straight, mostly as a whole, and would go after that, to their greatest “hits”.

Their gig had just begun for a few minutes. Chills. I wondered if that was due to the bass vibrating or some air-conditioning. It was neither and the chills would happen many other times again. In a jiffy, they had taken us with them. And not just us, the crowd, their musician Hinako Omori seemed possessed also. Kae embodies their music. And they are a pretty good teller. They sing alternating and mixing spoken words and rap, but always with pure poetry. They truly know how to take us on board to the journey of their introspective songs.

Their live performance of Salt Coast was really something intense. I was thrilled, it was an amazement. It’s not their most dynamic one, but what pace and poetry in it. Moreover the crowd was pretty responsive in either case. On the more dancing and rhythmic song Move later everybody had accelerated their movements. And conversely, even later, when they told us a poetry, musicless, seemingly almost not taking their breath, the audience was put, fascinated, and just listening. I’m tough with crowds, but this one was perfect. And I think Kae thought the same during the show, as they laughed with us many times, and seemed happy interacting with us. Their “clear” accent helped also.
Besides, their musician Hinako Omori, was a great part of the show, doing some chorus and listening to the intent of Kae. That’s no surprise Kae praised her and encouraged us to hear her solo work.

And yet, it was over. After a unanimous ovation, Kae granted us with a new song they were performing live for the first time, and left. I really hope I’ll be able to see Kae Tempest live for their next project.

C’était la course cette journée là. J’avais assisté à une représentation en français de la pièce Fracassés au théâtre du Cyclope de 16h à 17h30, écrite par nul.le autre que Kae Tempest ellui-même ! Une demi-heure pour rallier le Lieu Unique et récupérer ma place à la billetterie, et j’étais à l’intérieur avant 18h !!!

Mais avant d’en revenir à Kae, la première partie était assurée par Ivy Sole.
Iel est arrivé.e sur scène sûr.e d’ellui-même, son musicien, Joe Cephas, se faufilant derrière ellui. Comme Ivy a un fort accent américain et parlait franchement rapidement, la majorité d’entre nous spectateurs étions un peu à la traine et nous perdions des bouts. C’était assez évident pour ellui que la plupart d’entre nous dans la foule avions des difficultés à comprendre chacun de ses mots. Cependant nous avons vite été gagné par la musicalité et la poésie de son rap. Iel était vraiment doué pour chauffer la salle. Tantôt faisant des aller-retour sur scène, tantôt ancrée sur ses appuies, nous invitant à chanter ou agiter les bras ensemble. Derrière ellui, Joe, tout en lançant les sons, faisait aussi parfois des backs convaincant. Puis Ivy nous a lancé qu’ils étaient « ready to hear Kae Tempest ». Grâce à eux deux, nous l’étions aussi.

Le chauffage de salle n’était pas qu’une expression, il commençait vraiment à faire chaud. Tout le monde se découvrait. Et tout le monde dans le public resserrait néanmoins les rangs, pour être sûr de ne pas avoir froid … ou peut-être était-ce parce que Kae s’apprêtait à entrer en scène ?

Et là, iel est entré.e.

Kae nous a alors salué avec quelques mots en français avant de vanter le tourisme à Nantes avec son éléphant. Et nous a remercié nous d’être venu et Ivy Sole pour la première partie. Iel a alors expliqué qu’iel allait commencer par dérouler son dernier album The Line Is A Curve, d’une traite, comme un tout, et qu’ensuite iel nous ferait ses plus grands “hits”.

Son concert avait débuté depuis quelques minutes. Frissons. Je me suis demandé si cela venait de la vibration des notes basses ou bien de la climatisation. Ni l’un ni l’autre et les frissons allaient se reproduire à de multiples reprises ensuite. En un pouième de temps, iel nous avait emporté avec ellui. Et pas seulement nous, public, sa musicienne Hinako Omori semblait elle aussi possédée. Kae incarne sa musique. Et iel est un.e très bon.ne (ra)conteur.se. Iel chante en alternant et mélangeant spoken words and rap, mais toujours avec une poésie absolue. Iel sait véritablement comment nous embarquer avec ellui dans ses chansons introspectives.

Salt Coast jouée en live était vraiment quelque chose d’intense. J’étais transporté, c’était extatique. Ce n’est pas son morceau le plus dynamique, mais quelle montée et quelle poésie. Aussi le public était assez réactif dans chacun des cas. Par la suite, sur le morceau plus dansant et rythmé Move tout le monde avait suivi et accéléré ses mouvements. Et à l’inverse, encore plus tard, lorsqu’iel nous scandait une poésie, sans musique, semblant ne même plus reprendre son souffle, la salle était figée, fascinée, écoutant juste. Je suis difficile avec les publics, mais celui-ci était parfait. Et je crois que Kae pensait la même chose durant ce concert, car iel a rigolé avec nous à plusieurs reprises, et semblait heureux.se d’interagir avec nous. Son accent « clair » a aussi aidé.
En outre, sa musicienne Hinako Omori, avait aussi une place importante dans le concert, faisant certains chœurs et étant à l’écoute des intentions de Kae. Ce n’était donc pas une surprise que Kae lui rende hommage et nous invite à aller aussi écouter son travail en solo.

Et déjà, c’était la fin. Après une ovation unanime, Kae nous a offert une nouvelle chanson qu’iel jouait pour la première fois sur scène, et est parti.e. J’espère vraiment pouvoir retourner voir Kae Tempest sur scène avec son prochain projet.

En attendant, j’ai de la lecture…
